The VIN Check Digit Explained: How the 9th Character Works

Most characters in a VIN tell you something about the car — the make, the plant, the engine. The 9th character is different. It tells you nothing about the vehicle, and that’s exactly the point: it exists purely to prove the rest of the VIN is real.

What the check digit is for

On every standard 17-character VIN used in the US and Canada (1981 and newer), the 9th character is a check digit. It’s a single value calculated from all the other characters. When someone types or reads a VIN, the check digit lets a computer instantly verify the number is internally consistent — catching transposed characters, typos, and many crude forgeries before they cause problems downstream.

How it’s calculated (in plain terms)

The math is a weighted checksum. Each of the other 16 characters is turned into a number (letters map to values), then multiplied by a fixed “weight” assigned to its position in the VIN. All those results are added together, the total is divided by 11, and the leftover remainder is the check digit. Because a remainder can be anywhere from 0 to 10, and a single character can only be 0–9, a remainder of 10 is written as the letter X. If the value you calculate doesn’t equal the actual 9th character, the VIN doesn’t check out.

What it can and can’t tell you

A failing check digit on a US-market car is a strong signal that the VIN was mistyped or tampered with. But two caveats matter. First, some vehicles built for markets outside North America use the 17-character format without enforcing the check-digit rule, so an import can “fail” and still be legitimate. Second, a determined forger can construct a fake VIN that passes the check. Treat the check digit as a quick authenticity filter, not the final word — pair it with decoding the VIN and matching it against the title and door-jamb plate.
